How to Get a Skills Assessment for Australian Migration: A Step-by-Step Guide

Thinking of migrating to Australia, but confused about exactly what to do? You are not alone in this journey, we are here to help. If you ever plan to go to Australia, there is a process to achieve it. Among the processes, a very important process or requirement is the skill assessment test. Skills assessments are given by the applicable skills assessment authorities. A skills assessing authority is an organisation that checks that your skills meet the standards and is selected to work in a relevant occupation. The united list of eligible skilled professions sets out all relevant occupations under 5 occupation lists. Most occupations in each list have their own skills assessment authority. They can only accept a skills assessment issued by the relevant assessing authority. If you want to get a skill assessment, it is your responsibility to contact the relevant assessing authority for your occupation, if needed. Each assessing authority has its own assessment methods, timeline and costs. Getting a suitable skills assessment is mandatory for some visa subclasses or streams.

Steps to Get Skill Assessment for Australian Migration

You should read all of the available information related to the visa you are interested in applying for. This will allow you to decide if you need to submit a skills assessment and when you need to obtain it. We will break down the process below:

Check if you are eligible

First, you need to check if your occupation demands a skill assessment or not. Most of the occupations demand a skill assessment because it's a mandatory process to know if you are eligible for the occupation you are applying for. Then decide what type of visa you need for example 109 or a visa subclass 189. Visa 190 stands for a skilled nominated visa and visa 189 stands for a skill independent visa. If your visa type matches this type of visa, then you need a skill assessment test because most of the point-tested skilled migration visas require a mandatory skill assessment test.

Check your Occupation and Assessment Authority

To check your occupation, you need to go to the official website of the Australian government Department of Home Affairs. Go to the occupation list and check your occupation. You can also check your occupation by putting an ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) code. The list will give you correct data related to your occupation and also give you information about the assessment authority from which you can get your skill assessment test, for example, most of the occupations in Australia have a one assessment authority named VETASSESS. This assessment authority has so many occupations listed, from general professional occupations and trades, Engineers Australia for engineering roles, ACS for IT professionals and CPA Australia for accountants.

Contact a Relevant Assessment Authority

After checking your occupation, you will be required to connect with the relevant authority for your skill assessment test. Also, to know about the requirements and document related information visit their official website. You must fulfil all the requirements to be successful for your skill assessment test. Each assessment authority has its own requirements and criteria for qualifications and work experiences so be attentive and you must meet these requirements for positive outcomes.

Gather all your Documents

Gather all your documents related to the application and these documents should be in the right format, like high resolution, colour scan and correct translation if your documents are not in English. These documents are:

  • You will be required to show your identity Proof including your valid passport and birth certificate.
  • Academic qualifications include award certificates, full academic transcripts.
  • You will need to have proof of work experience which includes reference letters from an employer on company letterhead detailing duties, which contain your joining and leaving date of your company and salary slips, tax records and/or superannuation documents.
  • A detailed CV or Resume.
  • An English language test is needed by some authorities for assessment, while the Department of Home Affairs requires it for the visa.
  • Make sure that your application is ready for submission with all documents correctly provided to avoid delays.

Submit your Application and Pay the Fee

To submit your application, you have to apply from an assessment authority portal. You can not send it through email because this is not accepted. You can apply for the Skills Assessment Australia using the Online Portal of the authority. You or your agent will need to register and create a password.

After completing the registration process, you will get your username on your screen and also receive it at your email address. Once you receive your username, save it or note it with your password in a safe place, so that you will be easily able to access it whenever you need it in future. Now pay the application fee. The application fee may be different according to the assessment authority. Once your application is submitted, you can not see it or modify it.

Wait for the Result

The Department of Home Affairs will send you an email with the outcome of your Skills Assessment Australia application.

They will finalise applications within 120 days from the date you submit them online. This may change if they have so many applications or if your application is complex.

If your assessment is successful:

You will get a positive result letter, which you use when you submit your Expression of Interest through the SkillSelect system and your formal visa application to the Department of Home Affairs.

If your application is unsuccessful:

The outcome letter will explain the reasons why your application was rejected and also give you the options for review. The processing time can be different; it can generally take several weeks to months.
