Understanding the Points Test for Australian Skilled Migration

You should score a minimum number of points in order to be qualified for the visas like Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189), and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491) also Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190).
 

Eligibility Criteria for Skilled Migration Points Test 

Skilled Occupation List

To get qualified for the Australia points test you will be required to have an occupation from the skilled occupation list of Australia. The Skilled occupation list involves the most demanded occupation in the job market of Australia. Also, before proceeding with your application you will be required to ensure that you have a valid occupation and it is listed in the skilled occupation list(SOL).

Age Criteria

In the point test the points are granted on the basis of fulfilling the required criteria, and in this system it has a specific age criteria which applicants need to match. You can check the required criteria and points details below:

  • 18 to 24 Years: 25 Points
  • 25 to 32 Years: 30 Points
  • 33 to 39 Years: 25 Points
  • 40 to 44 Years: 15 Points
  • 45 to 49 Years: 0 Points

English Language Proficiency

You will be required to show your skill in the English language because English is the main language of Australia, so you have to be proficient in the local language. Also, the points are granted on the basis of the level of the language and for this you can take English language tests like IELTS, PTE and many more.

  • For the Competent level English you will be granted 0 Points.
  • For the Proficient level English you will be granted 10 Points.
  • For the Superior level English you will be granted 20 Points.
     

Work Experience

You will be required to have sufficient work experience in the nominated occupation to obtain good test points for both overseas and Australia.

Work Experience Overseas:

  • For 3 to 5 years of work experience you will be granted 5 points.
  • For 5 to 8 years of work experience you will be granted 10 points.
  • For more than 8 years of work experience you will be granted 15 points.

Work Experience Australia

  • For 1 to 3 years of work experience you will be granted 5 points.
  • For 3 to 5 years of work experience you will be granted 10 points.
  • For 5 to 8 years of work experience you will be granted 15 points.
  • For more than 8 years of work experience you will be granted 20 points.


Strong Academic Background

In Australia points test the points are also granted based on the academic background the qualification for the applicant, you can check the details below.

  • If you have completed your Doctorate then you will be granted with 20 points.
  • If you have completed your Bachelor or Master degree then you will be granted 15 points.
  • If you have completed your diploma from Australia or trade qualification then you will be granted with 10 points.
  • If you have an award or qualification known by the relevant assessing authority then you will be granted with 10 points.

Australian Study Requirement

If you have completed your qualification in Australia like a diploma, degree or trade qualification then you will be granted 5 points extra once you fulfil the required criteria regarding the duration of the programme and study type. Also, you will be granted 10 points for completing a postgraduate degree with research or a doctoral degree in the area like communication technology, science, technology, mathematics, or information and engineering. 

For Professional Year

If you complete a professional year in Australia then you will be granted 5 points towards skilled migration points tests. To qualify for this you need to fulfil the required criteria.
Credentialed Community Language (CCL)
The CCL is a test which checks your ability to interpret or translate and for this you will be granted 5 points.

Study in Regional Australia

You will be granted 5 points if you have completed a degree, diploma, or trade qualification in Australia. Also, you are required to fulfil the requirements of the study system of Australia.

Partner Skills

  • You will be granted 10 points if your partner is able to fulfil certain criteria like age, English language skill and skilled occupation. 
  • You will be granted 10 points if the age of your partner is under 45 years, have a level of English and have a positive skill assessment.
  • You will be granted 5 points if your partner is proficient in English.
  • If you have a single applicant then you will be granted 10 points.

Nomination and Sponsorship

If you have visa subclass 190 State or territory government nomination then you will be granted with 5 points. Also, if you have subclass 491 visa State or territory government nomination or a sponsorship from a qualified family member then you will be granted 15 points.
